Ben’s first feature film score was for Someone Else, by writer/director Nelson Kim, and starring Aaron Yoo and Leonardo Nam, which had its world premiere on March 13, 2015 at the Miami International Film Festival. He has also scored several shorts, including “7x6x2“, a sci-fi western written and co-directed by famed graphic novelist Paul Pope and produced by Tribeca Films, as well as Nelson Kim’s short, “Long Distance,” and Someone Else producer Geoff Quan‘s “The Other Way Round“. In addition to composing duties, Ben usually plays most of the instruments as well as produce and mix his scores, bringing a unified vision to the sound of the music.
Says director Kim of working with Ben: “Ben’s score for Someone Else sounds like nothing else out there. Sort of like the movie itself, it starts off somewhat conventionally, then becomes progressively weirder and wilder as it goes on. We wanted to take ideas to their limit — at one point he literally had to talk me out of putting in dog-whistle sounds that no human could hear. But that gives you an idea of how far out things got.”
